Sydney Listening Party
Sunday May 2, 2004

The day started well despite the train delays. Despite this almost everyone managed to arrive on time. Before entering the studios everyone signed the legal waivers. After waiting in the studio courtyard for approximately 15-20 minutes everyone was ushered into the studio where a message for Darren was read. Soon after this the album was played in its entirety. The reaction from the fans was positive despite the content of some of the tracks.

A short break after listening to the album for pizza and drinks allowed the fans to discuss what they had heard amongst themselves. Shortly after we all went back into the studio to discuss ideas for promotion of the album. This resulted in some great discussion and ideas, some which may end up being used to promote the album.

Before we all left the fans who had attended the Street Team session were invited back to the second listening session (a big Thank You to Tracey from the D-Zine for inviting us back). This was an opportunity not to be missed because it gave everyone who went back a chance to get a better perspective of the album.

The Album

The Tension and The Spark is an album that you will either Love or Hate but don’t judge it based on the first listen, it will grow on you. It is a dark album that shows the emotional hurt that Darren has been through at some point in his life. Musically it is a massive shift away from anything that Darren has done before. Personally I think it is a great achievement for Darren and if promoted properly, will do well around the world.

I’m not going to go into much detail on the tracks because honestly I need to hear the album many more times before I can do this. I will give a few comments on what I think though :)

• The song that is expected to be the first single is going to be huge.
• There were some songs that would suit a club environment perfectly.
• Darren will lose some fans but will gain more new fans as a result of a wider appeal.

Once the album is released I will write a complete review.
