Hayes reveals himself emotionally on new album
Posted By lssilver on Tuesday, June 29 2004 at 8:23 PM

Former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes has dug deep emotionally for his latest album - after going into therapy. The singer, 32, visited a psychiatrist after the release of his first solo disc and he's now made a deeply personal follow-up album The Tension and The Spark - which he considered releasing under an alias due to its soul-searching nature. Hayes explains, "It sounds very LA but I had lots of therapy. I analysed where I'd come from, my past, and my childhood. "I looked at experiences I've had in my job. I was paying the guy $100 a week to sit on the couch and talk about my life. "I thought I'd have to put it (The Tension and the Spark) out under an assumed name, like Damon Albarn did with Gorillaz. I joked it could have been called Freudian because it's self analytical, but not so much that the average person can't relate to it. "I have been blessed and cursed with the ability to really express myself. I'm a very sensitive and emotionally articulate person. "Making this album I went into the back of my mind and was almost apologizing for it." (wenn)

Darren Hayes Stops Traffic
June 25, 2004

DARREN Hayes literally stopped traffic in London this week while filming the video for his new single release, Popular, dancing with bikini-clad models.

Dancing in the street ... Darren Hayes and dancers in London.

Following on from the guerilla gigs trend which is sweeping the British capital, Hayes decided to stage a guerilla video shoot on the famed Oxford St tourist and shopping strip.

This involved just rocking up with models, crew and boom box in hand and filming whatever happened, instead of seeking official council permits or police approval, according to music writer Kathy McCabe.

All was going well, with Hayes strutting his new George Michael-style stuff in the front window of a Kookai store, but crowds swelled when the singer and crew headed out onto the pavement and people ended up on the street, disrupting traffic flow.

Police arrived and Hayes and the video gang did the bolt and hid in a side street while the constabulary sorted out the bottleneck.

They crept back onto the street and took up where they left off until another snarl developed and the police came to check out what was causing all the commotion.

The cat-and-mouse situation went on for half a day before the police finally caught the singer and his entourage.

They were ordered to cease and desist and are now waiting for the weather to clear to finish off the shoot.

The single spoofs the pop business with lines like "I'm willing to sleep my way to the top/I want to be pop-popular".

Expect a massive airwaves assault when radio stations are given the track on July 12 with Hayes' second solo album, The Tension and The Spark, released in late August.

Hayes should be back here from his London base before the end of the year to talk it up.

Ricardo- I thought I’d ring up Darren, er, on the show today. Darren and I are good friends like that. I thought I’d phone him up today and say thank you very much, so we’ve got Darren Hayes on the line. Hello Darren.

Darren- How are you?

R- I’m fine and how are you?

D- I’m absolutely thrilled to be talking to you.

R- Do you know what we’re thrilled to be talking to you as well because you’re coming to PITP which is great news

D- Oh yeah, I’m really excited about it. I did it a couple of years ago and it was a blast and lo and behold you’ve invited me back and I’m thrilled.

R- If I remember right you went down very, very well. They loved you.

D- You know what I’m gonna agree with you there. Hehehe. No, it was an awesome audience, I have to say, you can tell, you know and I would tell you the truth sometimes I’m not great sometimes I’m alright and it’s the audience that’s incredible, it makes all the difference and they were so wonderful so I’m really looking forward to seeing everybody again.

R- OK, I came to see you in Wolverhampton when you played at the Civic Hall and you played a brilliant gig and you are so good live and I’m not just saying that.

D- Awww

R- It was a really good gig and as you say PITP rocked when you were here two years ago

D- No, it’s really great energy and I’m really glad to be a part of it.

R- You’re gonna love where it is this year. It’s actually in a park this year for a change.

D- *chuckles* Really?

R- In a beautiful park called Cannon Hill Park, right next to a lake, the sun is going to shine.

D- Let me just write that down so I make sure I go to the right place.

R- Yes.

D- Right, got it.

R- We’ll come and pick you up

D- Cool

R- Don’t worry about that. You get to the airport, we’ll pick you up from there, alright?

D- Awesome.

R- What have you been up to? You’ve not released anything for a while, have you?

D- I’ve got a brand new album that comes out actually, September sixth, and I’ve been recording for over a year. The first single actually comes out in August so I’m think I’m gonna play it actually for you guys on stage at PITP.

R-I hope so.

D- So I’m real excited.

R- Popular?

D- It’s called Popular

R- OK, I’m trying to get a copy of it, we’ve not got a copy here.

D- *cheeky laugh*

R- But if we get a copy before the end of the show today then I will play it.

D- Awesome.

R- We’re working on it.

D- Alright…it’s all a little secret isn’t it?

R- Yeah. I don’t know if we can play it but Claire from Sony is trying to get a copy of it.

D- Awesome

R- Bless her. So you’ve been busy, busy writing.

D- I have, I actually worked with a lot of English people, I worked with [sorry, two names I couldn’t make out. Someone is bound to know who they are.] and they’re both people who have done records with Bjork and Madonna so it’s a really interesting record for me. It’s a very personal record; it’s called The Tension And The Spark and I’m so excited to get it out there and tour. I think even it could be October. It’s not official but I think we’re looking at touring here in October.

R- I hope sp

D- Yeah I’m thrilled.

R- That’ll be good. All you songs are quite emotional I mean we play Insatiable all the time on work place anthems here because we get people to request songs and they’re always requesting that tune.

D- Well, the first single is a bit cheeky actually, from the record

R- Is it?

D- But when you hear it you’ll get what I mean. It’s quite a, quite a funny commentary on what it takes to get to the top these days.

R- We’ll try and play it before I go at four o’clock this afternoon.

D- Alright then.

R- Darren, thank you very, very much for agreeing to come to PITP.

D- My pleasure

R- We look forward to seeing you on the 10th July. Darren Hayes will be there… thank you Darren.

D- Thank You

From DarrenHayesMusic.com:

Darren has just completed the "Tension And The Spark" photo shoot in New York. The photos were taken on June 2 in New York's Peninsula Hotel with photographer Jeff Riedel. Jeff is an amazing photographer who has shot for Vogue and recently did Missy Elliott's "Under Construction" Cover. We are told that the images are incredible.
