Happy Birthday
Current mood:smug
Category: Music

I've been recording a secret side project album with my long term co
writer and collaborator Robert Conley over the past 2 years. It was
finished and mixed in December last year and just last week the album
was mastered.

It's a band we call 'We Are Smug'. Robert and I share lead vocal and
songwriting duties on everything, and up until this second, we haven't
spoken a word of it to anyone outside of our circle of friends.

But today, on my birthday, we've decided it's release day and if you
visit www.wearesmug.com you can download it for free.

This is not the direction of my next album, nor is 'free' the new
price for my music. This is just something I am doing because I can.

While you're digesting this, I'm hard at work on songs for a brand new
studio album for next year. It's a big 'fuck off' pop record. POP
with a capital P if you will. You better have high expectations.

In the meantime, enjoy being Smug.
And Happy Birthday.
xD

Sony/ATV Acquires Savage Garden Catalog
By Andre Paine, London

Sony/ATV Australia has acquired the worldwide publishing rights to the Rough Cut Music catalog, including all of Savage Garden's hit songs. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Sydney-based music publisher's catalog also includes successful songwriters and artists from Australasia such as Evermore, Kisschasy and the Butterfly Effect.

Savage Garden had worldwide success, selling over 25 million albums and 15 million singles written by band members Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones, according to a statement from Sony/ATV. The band's hits, released by Columbia, included "Truly Madly Deeply," "I Knew I Loved You," "I Want You" and "To The Moon And Back." They split in 2001.

"Savage Garden's Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones are world-class songwriters whose music has withstood the test of time," said Martin N. Bandier, Chairman and CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, in a statement. "We are delighted that their songs, along with the songs of the well-known Australian groups like Evermore, Kisschasy and The Butterfly Effect are now a part of the ever-growing Sony/ATV roster."

Upon the sale of their catalog, CEO John Woodruff and business partners Karen Hamilton, catalog manager, and GM Keith Welsh, said they were pleased that the catalog had ended up with Sony/ATV.

"We believe that Sony/ATV is exactly the right new home for our writers," said their joint statement. "Marty Bandier was involved with Darren and Daniel in the early days of Savage Garden when he was at EMI, [Sony/ATV Australia managing director] Damian Trotter and his team are excellent music people who we know will give great support to all the writers and artists we have had the pleasure of developing over the years. We thank each and every writer we have worked with - to be actively involved with such talented people is an inspiring way to live."

Sony/ATV also acquired a second company, Second Pressing, as part of the deal. The acquisitions include various administration deals.

Prior to the deal, Second Pressing collected Rough Cut royalties in Australia, while Warner/Chappell handled the rights for the rest of the world. Some of the Warner/Chappell rights to the catalog expired before this deal, at the beginning of 2009.

Damian Trotter added: "Obviously, we are all extremely excited to be custodians of such internationally recognized pop gems as those penned by Darren and Daniel of Savage Garden, but we are also very much looking forward to working with great artists like Kisschasy, Evermore and the many other excellent writers that John, Keith and Karen have developed within the Rough Cut stable and look forward to carrying on their great work in developing and furthering their careers."

Darren Hayes to mentor Idol contestants
Pop star Darren Hayes will be the second big name to mentor Australian Idol hopefuls after 80s icon Cyndi Lauper put them through their paces this week.

The former Savage Garden frontman, guest judge alongside Tina Arena and Ian `Dicko' Dickson at this year's London audition, will return home to help the contestants as they prepare for Aussie Hits week.

Lauper will be a special guest judge on Sunday's 80s theme episode, and will perform her classic hit Time After Time on Monday's elimination show.
It's the first year Australian Idol has introduced celebrity mentors, with producers promising more big names to come.

"We are thrilled that the level of talent that Idol has uncovered this year has attracted so many major international musicians," Network Ten executive producer Stephen Tate told AAP.
"Watch for more announcements in the coming weeks."
Music director John Foreman, who's been with the Network Ten singing contest from its beginning in 2003, said there was a lot of exciting performers to come.

"Producers of the show are aiming very high this year," Foreman told AAP on Friday.

"There's two reasons for this: number one it's great for the contestants to have the opportunity to be mentored by people who really know what they're doing.
"And the other thing is that Australian Idol is pulling such high viewer numbers now that for an artist to launch an album or promote a single it's actually a very valuable vehicle for them to do that."

Lauper has been very hands-on with the hopefuls this week, pushing them outside their comfort zone.

"Cyndi Lauper's approach to performance is probably very different to how many of these contestants would have approached performing, but we've just spent the last couple of days working with her and she's worked quite closely and became quite engaged with each contestant," Foreman said.
"She's obviously a fan of the show, she's a fan of each of the contestants, and was very keen to spend lots of time with them."
